The Pilates Method (pronounced “puh-LAH-teez”) is a total-body conditioning workout for both men and women that engages you and leaves you refreshed and alert. Many members love Pilates because it is fun, challenging and different.
Manhattan Athletic Club offers numerous Reformer and Small Group Training Classes in our Mind-Body Studio. Each reformer class has a maximum number of 4 students. The reformer apparatus offers spring resistance resulting in gentle—yet effective and functional—strength and core training. In a typical Pilates session, the client will practice a series of exercises that will challenge the muscles in the trunk and encourage flexibility, proper posture and joint stability. Scapular stabilization and proper body alignment are critical to performing the exercises, leading to a diminishing of muscular imbalances.
After beginning a Pilates–based exercise regime, clients can expect to gain more control and awareness of their bodies when performing everyday life activities. Other benefits include the alleviation of back and body aches, the lengthening of muscles for increased flexibility, greater use of the respiratory muscles due to the breathing work involved, as well as feelings of being centered due to the amount of concentration required.
Pilates work focuses on several important factors that could only benefit any type of athlete. No matter what your fitness goals are, or what sports you play, you can bet that greater core strength, flexibility, and overall control of the body will benefit you.
As stated in the note above, this program is currently suspended. However, typically, one would contact the Pilates Director via the Club to learn more, to set up private/semi-private lessons, or to learn of openings in regular small group classes.
PLEASE NOTE (as of 11/20/14):
Unfortunately, the Reformer Pilates program is temporarily suspended until the Club hires an instructor with a Reformer Pilates certification.
If, by chance, you have stumbled onto this page because you happen to be such an instructor and have interest in this role, feel free to email your information to the Club via firstname.lastname@example.org.
